Blacksmithing can pay for itself as you approach the highest levels because you can sell the armour and weapons you create on the Auction House. High-end crafted epics are often in demand by non-raiding players.
What you’ll need:
133 Rough Stone, 190 Copper Bar, 24 Coarse Stone, 5 Silver Bar, 120 Bronze Bar, 150 Heavy Stone, 5 Gold Bar, 230 Iron Bar, 35 Green Dye, 50 Steel Bar, 5 Truesilver Bar, 60 Solid Stone, 150 Mageweave Cloth, 320 Mithril Bar, 20 Dense Stone, 490 Thorium Bar, 80 Rugged Leather or 10 Star Ruby, 155 Fel Iron Bar, 10 Netherweave Cloth, 70 Adamantite Bar, 320 Cobalt Bar, 501 Saronite Bar, 7 Titanium Bar, 33 Eternal Earth, 13 Eternal Shadow, 13 Eternal Water
To begin, you’ll need to learn Apprentice Blacksmithing from a trainer in one of the capital cities – Ironforge, Darnassus or Stormwind. If you have trouble finding a trainer, ask a guard and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Note you’ll need 10 of these later on, so hang onto them or pop them in the bank for when you need them.

When you hit level 40 and have a Blacksmithing skill of at least 200, you can specialize as either an Armorsmith or a Weaponsmith. If you choose Weaponsmith, later on you can further hone your skills in maces, axes or swords.

You need to go see Harggan in the Hinterlands (13.4,44.0) for this recipe. He can only sell one every half an hour so if someone bought it before you, you’ll have to wait around a bit.

There’s a choice here, as the easiest way to level is to make mithril spurs – but you’ll need to check the auction House for the plans. If they’re there, and going relatively cheap, then buy them and make them until you hit 225. Otherwise, stick with:

To get this recipe, go see Derotain Mudsipper in Gadgetzan (51.4,28.7). He gives a quest asking for 10 Thorium bars. Buy them (or mine them), turn them in and then use these plans.

There’s a choice of crafts here. Both need 12 Thorium Bars – but the helm needs 1 Star Ruby and the boots need 8 Rugged Leather. See which one is cheapest and buy enough to make one of the following:

Beyond 445, without raiding, it’s difficult to get plans to level the last five points. On the upside, you can keep making easy items and selling them – or alternatively advertise on the trade chat channel to craft for other players with their materials. It won’t take long before you have 450 Blacksmithing – congratulations!
